HR Business or People Discipline? - Ros Palmer - 09 Oct 2008
Getting past the depressing front pages of this week’s Personnel Today (‘credit crunch’ ‘500,000 jobs to go’ etc.) my eye was drawn to an article on page 4 entitled: ‘CIPD vows to raise HR profile by working with government’. In the article (by Guy Logan) it says that ‘Jackie Orme, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), has pledged to work with the government to improve the standing of HR professional in the boardroom.’

I hit the pile of mags on my desk today (whilst my computer was being upgraded so I had to tear myself away) and really loved the articles in Growing Business (www.growingbusiness.co.uk) . They have a new columnist Oli Barrett who writes a sort of extended blog on topics that take his interest.

My Brother asked me to look after my nephew one weekend over the summer (what summer I hear you cry) well exactly – what do you do with a five year old when it’s chucking it down with rain outside? I made the mistake (or so I thought) of asking him what he wanted to do and his reply was: “I want to go and see Kung Fu Panda Auntie Suze”. “Oh no” I thought – another animated film that I have to sit through. But he is a lovely kid and feeds me white minstrels throughout our trips to the movies so let’s do it!
Let's lobby for a new Bank Holiday - Ros Palmer - 21 Aug 2008
Driving to work this morning, I heard Chris Moyles and crew celebrating the fact that this is a bank holiday weekend. They then put an immediate dampener on it. No, not due to a terrible weather forecast – evidently it may be OK – no, due to the fact that next Monday will signal the last UK bank holiday of the year. Well, until Christmas anyway.

Three of our team recently returned from a two week to the States where they presented to over 150 enthusiastic and welcoming attendees. It is safe to say that the team also loved it even when Jules managed to forget that she had a super small, super powerful, mic attached to her shirt and went off for a ‘comfort break’. We don’t need to go into details, but all the delegates gathered in the room found out exactly what kind of comfort Jules was looking for until her colleague Jo burst into the Ladies restrooms shouting ‘Jules stop. You are miked up and live!’.
