Binge Thinking
Is it what we're talkin' about? - Ros Palmer
So the latest series of the Apprentice is over and I now have to plan my Wednesday evenings all over again. How will I cope without shouting at the television non-stop for an hour and then hearing the outcome discussed on every radio and tv programme, in the supermarket, at work and just about everywhere on Thursday? How can I learn whole new ways of using the English language such as, 'Will you stop conflicting me Alex?' and how can I decide if Lee is anything like a worthy winner?
Basically, for me, the whole series outcome (and final few weeks for that matter) boils down to two issues. Bolshy blokes versus bolshy women and if lying to get ahead should be rewarded.
I have to admit that I was rooting for Lee. I liked his brilliant sales skills, enthusiasm, work ethic and, let's face it, uncanny ability to avoid the dreaded boardroom. But I squirmed and clasped my hand to my mouth when his deception on his CV came to light. Even worse he at first tried to brazen it out. His own explanation that he was insecure about his (lack of) education is human and almost endearing but why not be brave about the fact going into the competition? Let's face it, Sir Alan is the poster boy for everyone who thinks that three years of a university degree may teach you less about the business world than immediately hiring a barrow stand on Camden market and selling, well, possibly anything apart from fish.
There are regular polls each year about who we trust the least. Politicians and journalists rank high. Gordon Brown always took the high road on such issues and once yelled at Tony Blair: "I cannot believe a word you say". Quite. But people still voted for Blair and he is doing pretty darn well on the speaking and consultancy circuit now. I won't even start on both Bill and Hillary Clinton (the latter who 'misspoke' recently). Again, a hard call as they both seem to be excellent politicians.
Perhaps I should just stop 'conflicting' myself? Now that's what I'm talkin' about.
