Be one of life's success stories |

Sometimes it can be useful to do this little test on yourself. If you imagine you have reached a ripe old age and, you have decided it is a good time to look back and reflect on your life – Imagine, what are the things you have achieved? What might others say you have done with your life? Would they say you have been one of life's success stories?
'Now' (today) rather than 'then' (many years in the future) might be a good time to think about your achievements. What have you made a difference about so far and what are the things you want to make sure you achieve in your lifetime?
If you haven't done so recently it will be worthwhile taking a couple of minutes to write down those things you want to make a difference about. Consider the following 3 questions to help you with this:
| > |
What might be some of the things I want to make a difference about? |
| |
| > |
What does a successful life mean for me? |
| |
| > |
How will I know I have been one of life's success stories? |
If you are familiar with Go MAD Thinking you will already know that the good news for everyone, whatever age you are now, is that the factors that go into 'success' or 'making a difference' have been researched, analysed and formulated so that every single one of us can make a difference IF WE WANT TO. This has become a way of thinking involving seven key success principles, with eleven critical links forming them into an interdependent system. We call it Go MAD Solution Focused Thinking. Many of our clients say that Solution Focused Thinking is structured common sense, however it does not always seem to be common practice.
We also find that some participants on our programmes believe that they follow these principles already, and they are right. Everyone employs these principles subconsciously when they are being successful, for the little things in life as well as the big things. That means whether getting out of the house in the morning or turning a company around from loss into profit, you are using the same principles. The main challenge is how you use them on a more consistent basis so that you generally become more effective, and think more creatively, more clearly and more quickly more of the time?
The initial step is to bring these principles to the forefront of your mind, so that you can apply them at the conscious level and make sure you are operating them to the best of your ability. This is a bit like teaching someone else to drive – we suddenly realise we have to really think again about how to drive correctly, to be able to teach someone, because the actions have become so habitual that we do them automatically.
Here are the seven key principles of making a difference with some questions to help you think about how you might apply them to yourself.
Reason Why –you have to have a strong motivation or reason why you want to achieve your goals. How strong is your reason for wanting to be one of life's success stories?
Define Goal – goals are more motivating and easier to achieve if they are defined very specifically, with a clear measure and a timescale. How clearly defined are the things you want to achieve?
Plan Priorities – how many possibilities do you think of before rushing into action? One? Ten? Thirty? One hundred? How often do you sit down and plan what are your top priorities?
Self-Belief – do you believe that you have the confidence, knowledge, skills and attitude to achieve your goals? If not, how might you go about increasing your self-belief?
Involve Others – the bigger your goal, the higher your chances of success if you involve other people, and not just those immediately around you but people you don't yet know! Who might you choose to involve in shaping your life's success?
Personal Responsibility – this lies at the heart of the Go MAD Thinking System. A responsibility culture is the opposite of a blame culture. It means that you not only have to take responsibility to make things happen, but also take responsibility when things go wrong. How much responsibility are you prepared to take to achieve your goals?
Take Action and Measure Results – if everything else is in place then it will be easy to follow through, take action and measure the results of your success. What will you do?
The links between these principles, forming them into a complete system are just as important. None of these principles can function in isolation, and if any one of them is weak then the chances of success are severely diminished. Or it could be that if the goal is achieved then, it's possible that it was more of a struggle than necessary or it wasn't done as well as it might have been. So for you to dramatically increase your probability of success, start by applying these straight forward principles to anything you want to achieve.

"Many people seem to think that success in one area can compensate for failure in other areas. But can it really? ...True effectiveness requires balance."

"We have no choice of what colour we're born or who our parents are or whether we're rich or poor. What we do have is some choice over what we make of our lives once we're here."
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor
"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal."
Albert Pike
"Don't go round saying the world owes you living. The world owes you nothing.
It was here first."
Mark Twain
"If we wait to foil a bank robbery or rescue someone tied on the railroad tracks we will never be a hero. We probably won't even come across a cat stuck in a tree. As long as we sit at the bus stop waiting for our great moment we will miss our real chance at the heroic; the infinite number of tiny daily acts inspired by the great. Our actions may seem insignificant, but the results will grow and multiply."

Two questions to ask yourself:
Which of these quotes appeals to me most and why?
If I were to write my own quote to inspire, what would it be?
