Saving £11.6million with Solution Focused Thinking

How engaging people in a more effective way of working saved one organisation time & money

Discover how you could help your organisation save time and money by engaging people in a more effective way of working.

For the past 18 months, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), have been working in partnership with Go MAD Thinking, using our brand ThinkOn®, to engage their people to create a sustainable culture of empowerment. Using Solution Focused Thinking coaching frameworks and universally applicable tools has resulted in some amazing differences being made.

A recent evaluation of the work highlighted the impact this has had on; increased staff well-being, improved teamwork and management, staff retention and cost savings all leading to improvements in service.

One amazing difference we want to shout about, however, is TEWV's identification of £11.6million in cost savings using Solution Focused Thinking tools.

Watch what Finance Director Patrick McGahon and Master Coach Hannah Crawford have to say about how they took on the challenge of creating momentum and belief that there was scope for further efficiency, involving others to help identify these savings.

“For the last five years clinical services used quality improvement aimed at increasing their purposefulness and productivity. Whilst the process has delivered significant quality improvement, latterly financial savings delivery has been more challenging. Hence, the Trust needed a complimentary approach to help deliver its future Cash Release Efficiency Savings (CRES) requirements. The outputs from the process had to maintain or improve the quality of service user and carer services, plus delivering national targets.

We used the coaching methodology to stimulate broader creativity and to think about savings in a different way. The goals have been achieved and surpassed and have protected impact on frontline clinical services to patients and their carers. We have also observed that there has been a change in culture across all teams working on CRES with a much more ‘can do’ attitude.

I have worked in NHS Finance for over 25 years with a key focus on identifying and delivering cost savings. I have recommended this approach to Director of Finance colleagues and think this can be applied easily across the NHS and move us forward in terms of cost saving ideas.”

Congratulations to TEWV for being finalists with this piece of work in the Health Service Journal Awards - Financial or Procurement Initative of the Year!
